Financial fraud by a person claiming to be an Indian Railways employee

Complaint Description

To The Concerned Authority Indian Railways Subject: Complaint regarding suspected misrepresentation by a person claiming to be an Indian Railways Loco Pilot Respected Sir/Madam, I wish to bring to your attention an incident that occurred on 13 August 2026 at approximately 6:00–6:15 PM at Peerless Hospital, Kolkata, involving a person who represented himself to us as an Indian Railways Loco Pilot. On the above-mentioned date and time, I was at Peerless Hospital along with my mother when an unknown man approached us and requested financial assistance. He stated that he required approximately ₹360, apparently for his travel/commute expenses, and explained that his family had left and that he needed the money to make arrangements to reach home. He initially told us that he would return the money through GPay after reaching home. For this purpose, he asked for my mobile number and immediately gave me a missed call from his mobile number. His phone appeared to be a keypad phone. During the conversation, he asked me whether I was giving the money willingly. I nodded, as I was hesitant but did not want to appear rude in the situation. He then assured us that we could trust him because he claimed to be a Loco Pilot of Indian Railways. Although he had initially asked for ₹360, he subsequently suggested that we give him ₹500 instead. Relying on his representation and believing that he would repay the amount after reaching home, my mother gave him ₹500 in cash. He then left the hospital. Afterwards, I became suspicious about the incident. I searched online using the information available to me and found information regarding what appeared to be a previous complaint involving the same person and the same mobile number, in which another individual in Kolkata had reportedly made a complaint to Indian Railways regarding a similar incident. Following this, we immediately approached the security staff at Peerless Hospital and informed them about what had happened. The security staff checked the hospital's CCTV footage, and the entire interaction was captured on CCTV. I subsequently attempted to contact the person on the mobile number from which he had given me the missed call. I called him two to three times, but he did not answer any of my calls. I subsequently blocked the number. I am therefore bringing this matter to the attention of the Indian Railways authorities, particularly because the individual specifically represented himself as an Indian Railways Loco Pilot in order to gain our trust. I request that the Railways kindly verify whether this person is actually associated with Indian Railways and, if so, verify his identity, designation and employment details. I also request that the matter be investigated in view of the similar complaint that I found and the CCTV footage available at Peerless Hospital. I am willing to provide the following information/evidence if required: 1. The mobile number used by the person. 2. The missed call received from his number and relevant call records. 3. Details/screenshots of the previous complaint that I found online. 4. Details regarding the CCTV footage available at Peerless Hospital. 5. Any further information required to identify the individual. I am submitting this complaint so that the matter may be properly verified and investigated, and so that appropriate action may be taken if the individual has falsely represented himself as an Indian Railways employee or has been involved in similar incidents. He told his name to be Sanmoy Banerjee , the number from which he gave a missed call is 8282093098 Thank you for your attention to this matter.
